As part of the working group <em data-start=\"388\" data-end=\"448\">\u201cUrbanization: a Marshall Plan for the City of the Future\u201d<\/em> within the Think Tank <em data-start=\"471\" data-end=\"503\">\u201c2030, Investing in Tomorrow,\u201d<\/em> co-founded by Edmond de Rothschild Asset Management in partnership with L\u2019Agefi and ID L\u2019Info Durable, Alexis Bossard shares his analysis of the challenges surrounding sustainable mobility.<\/p>\n            <\/div>\n                      <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n    \n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A two-speed transition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some segments of sustainable mobility have progressed remarkably. Soft mobility\u2014particularly cycling\u2014perfectly illustrates this trend. In just a few years, cities have built extensive cycling infrastructure and usage has surged, whether for commuting, school travel, or everyday errands. Public transport has also made significant progress: in France, one-third of networks are already decarbonized through the electrification of trains and buses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<script src=\"https:\/\/cdnapisec.kaltura.com\/p\/2208281\/sp\/2208281100\/embedIframeJs\/uiconf_id\/47185423\/partner_id\/2208281?autoembed=true&#038;entry_id=1_r8gfnemd&#038;playerId=kaltura_player_1759335131&#038;cache_st=1759335131&#038;width=560&#038;height=395\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>However, not all sectors are advancing at the same pace. Electric vehicles, often presented as the cornerstone of the transition, are struggling to meet expectations. With a market penetration rate of barely 15% in Europe\u2014far from the 30% initially anticipated\u2014the sector faces two major obstacles: purchase prices still 10\u201315% higher than those of internal combustion vehicles, and insufficient charging infrastructure, particularly in rural areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe have all heard anecdotes of drivers stranded in the middle of the Massif Central searching for a charging station,\u201d Alexis Bossard notes, illustrating the persistent shortcomings of the network.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Barriers to an ambitious transition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The challenges are multiple and interconnected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, economic: rising interest rates have increased the cost of infrastructure, while households seek to preserve purchasing power, sometimes at the expense of environmentally friendly choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cProtecting purchasing power has at times taken precedence over the energy transition,\u201d Bossard observes, citing Sweden\u2019s decision to scale back its biofuel quotas.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Second, geopolitical: the war in Ukraine has not only driven up energy prices but has also pushed climate urgency into the background in the face of immediate security concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cFinding substitutes for Russian gas and Saudi oil has complicated the situation,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, industrial: Europe must accelerate its development of battery production and charging networks, or risk seeing the 2035 deadline for ending internal combustion engines postponed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAn extra year or two would not fundamentally change the outcome, but industry needs time to adapt,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A holistic investment approach<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to these challenges, Edmond de Rothschild Asset Management adopts a comprehensive strategy covering the entire sustainable mobility value chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe do not limit ourselves to manufacturers of bicycles, electric cars, or batteries,\u201d explains Bossard. \u201cWe also look at infrastructure players such as charging station installers, cable manufacturers, and biofuel specialists.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>He cites the example of <strong>Neste<\/strong>, a former Finnish refiner that has become a leader in sustainable fuels, now supplying 2% of the jet fuel used in Europe. He also mentions <strong>AXA<\/strong>, which has emerged as a key insurer for soft mobility and partners with platforms such as <strong>BlaBlaCar<\/strong>, as well as <strong>Dassault Syst\u00e8mes<\/strong>, whose simulation software helps design tomorrow\u2019s smart cities by optimizing transport networks and public services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For investors, the challenge is to support both large incumbents undergoing transformation and innovative players, while identifying those best positioned to benefit from the transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Positive prospects despite uncertainties<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the obstacles, the outlook remains decidedly positive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe direction is clear: climate urgency is real and the energy transition is unavoidable,\u201d says Bossard.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>While timelines may fluctuate\u2014\u201ca year or two either way is not the main issue\u201d\u2014the momentum is firmly established. Moreover, in the wake of Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, Europe must find its own solutions to ensure energy sovereignty, making the green transition a strategic priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cMarkets still underestimate the growth potential of companies in this space.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The gap between corporate prospects and current market valuations represents a compelling opportunity for investors.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A two-speed transition Some segments of sustainable mobility have progressed remarkably.
